APRIL 2012
Lulu’s – on 24th April, AIW members and their guests had a marvellous get-together and chat while enjoying a superb meal with plenty of wine at Lulu’s restaurant in Church Street, St. Julian’s.  The evening was arranged so that the members who are unable to attend the daytime events (due to work commitments) could catch up with fellow AIW members.  The Lulu’s staff were extremely pleasant and efficient and ensured that we all had a wonderful time.  The evening ended with a raffle for a hamper which was kindly donated by Cleland and Souchet.  All agreed that the evening should be repeated.

Spring Walk – On 19th April, a spring walk in Msida Bastion Historic Gardens was enjoyed by a goup of AIW members along with two of their very well behaved dogs!  The gardens have been lovingly restored by volunteers who have created a superb memorial in itself to those buried there.  Dr Andy Walsh gave a fascinating guide to the lives and nobility of those who found their resting place in these stunningly beautiful gardens.  A visit is highly recommended along with a warm welcome to any volunteers who would like to assist in maintaining the gardens.

FEBRUARY 2012
Pasta Lunch – On 24th February, AIW Malta members and their guests had an extremely pleasant lunch at the Black Pearl, Ta’ Xbiex.  The food was delicious with a brushetta starter, followed by a variety of pasta dishes all washed down with a glass (or two) of wine and a coffee to finish.  All agreed that it was a most enjoyable lunch and should become a regular event.  AIW Malta thanks the staff of the Black Pearl for its excellent hospitality and service.

NOVEMBER 2011
Evening Serenade’ – 18th November 2011.  AIW Malta’s concert  featuring internationally renowned soprano Valerie Watts, local tenor Alfred Cauchi and introducing young soprano Nicola Mangion  all with piano accompaniment by Jenny Meads was a resounding success and raised Eur2000.00 for the Puttinu Cares Foundation.  The concert took place in the elegant ballroom of Casino Maltese in Valletta.   AIW Malta thanks the artistes for giving their time so generously and providing such wonderful entertainment.  AIW Malta also thanks its sponsors – Casino Maltese, Trattoria Palazz, Qronfla, M&S, and Meridiana – for their support in this venture.

OCTOBER 2011
Grand Master’s Palace Valletta – on 25th October AIW Malta members and their guests were given a glimpse into Malta’s rich history and culture when they were taken on  a guided tour of the Magisterial Palace and the Parliamentary Chamber.  Mrs Doris Cussens guided the group around the Palace state rooms explaining their use over the last 400 years or so, while Ms. Maria Camilleri Calleja explained the history of the House of Representatives and Parliamentary procedure. AIW Malta thanks Mrs Cussens and Ms Camilleri Calleja for making the tour so enjoyable.

U.S. Embassy visit – on 24th October a group of AIW Malta members were invited on a tour of the new U.S. Embassy premises at Ta’Qali.  The compound is spread over 40,400 square metres.  The members were privileged in that the Charge D’Affaires took time out of his busy schedule to talk to them.  He explained that the new premises brought together a number of facilities that were previously spread over the island such as the marine quarters, warehouses and offices.  The main areas inside that the members were taken to were the conference centre, the impressive Information Resource Centre and the main hall with the offices on the second floor.  In the main hall there are many works of modern art which are all representative of the ties between Malta and the U.S.A.  Outside the members walked around the beautifully landscaped grounds and visited the recreational area.  It was a most enjoyable and informative trip and AIW Malta thanks the U.S. Embassy staff for their time and hospitality.

MAY 2011
World Quiz Day – was represented in Malta by AIW’s quiz night held on 11th May at the Black Pearl, Ta’ Xbiex. It was a very successful, fun evening which raised more than €400 for a local children’s organisation. The donation was topped up to €1000 from AIW Malta funds.

Day Trip to Sicily – on 29th May a group of members and their partners visited Pozzallo and Modica where they had the opportunity to visit the chocolate factories, dolcerria makers and coffee shops or take a walk to Modica Alta and its historic centre. All enjoyed a traditional Sicilian lunch with a visit to a winery in the afternoon. It was a long and tiring day but thoroughly enjoyed by all.

APRIL 2011
Visit to Simar Nature Reserve – on 18th April, several members visited Is Simar which is situated in Wied il-Pwales near Xemxija. Is-Simar was a neglected and degraded marsh until the early 1990s when it was converted by BirdLife Malta into a wildlife sanctuary. The area now supports several forms of native wildlife with the reeds and pools being especially attractive to secretive aquatic bird species like herons, grebes, rails and kingfisher. A number of birds breed there including reed warbler and moorhen. Other wildlife includes reptiles such as snakes, skinks and chameleons. All agreed it was a most interesting visit and AIW Malta made a donation of €100 to Birdlife Malta.
